rOLL oUt THe REd cARpEt...i'M cOmiNG HoME!!

I'm finally coming home - Fuck Yeah!

I survived Dubbo Base Hospital Maternity Ward! Mmm that would make a good T-shirt.

I have a day of packing tomorrow and then I'm flying back home to Palmy on the 16th.

Air New Zealand changed my flight schedule at the last minute but it's all good. So long as I touch down in Palmerston North on Thursday some time then I'm all happy.

I had one more dig on the dance floor at the infamous 'Pastoral Hotel' last Saturday night, just for the sake of reminding me again why it is I shouldn't drink and sing.

I dropped off some token lindt 'lindor chocolates' to the Labour Ward and maternity Ward - sorry Special Care Nursery (I didn't get paid enough to get 3 boxes) - ya'll just have to share.

I've washed and dried my new wardrobe; shout out to Dubbo Myer store.

I have scoffed back most of the food stuffs that I had as residual to my 3 month stay, and I'm looking forward to chucking out the remainder tomorrow or giving it away if appropriate.

I have no idea how I have sent back 3 boxes of 'stuff' to NZ and still believe I am going to be over the weight limit. I need a 'tardis' suitcase.

I am going to be so excited this time Thursday, I doubt I will be able to contain myself. Seeing Justin at the Palmy airport is going to be just too much. If I don't cry with happiness I will be bluffing.

It's been a party of a time! Thanks to all those who made my 4 months fun and bearable. You all know who you are - I have made so many new friends. Big hugs to you all. Maybe you will see me back in Ingham or Dubbo in the not so distant future.

Maybe.

Nothing is set in stone...

...so I could click my heels together and go home.

Skyping has become my virtual reality. I just sit at my iPad watching Justin cooking himself dinner in the kitchen 3 rooms away from the apple mac. I cling to every little piece of 'normal' that I happen to catch; the cats saunter past the dining room when Justin begins to chop up chicken and start meowing at the kitchen opening, Justin chats to them and tells them they've missed out on the chicken as it's already in the curry paste, I can hear the bells ringing on the front door as Justin goes in and out to the herb garden...it's all those little things that I miss the most. It's these things that make up our life together. The blues and jazz music thrumming out in the background as Justin pours another red wine to compliment his dining experience.
I can just sit mesmerised in front of my iPad for hours, just watching Justin doing the one thing we love to do every weeknight and every weekend together; listen to music, drink wine and cook.
We have long since run out of anything to talk about, I just simply want to sit and feel like I'm there, even if I do seem to be trapped in the computer room (I just try not to think about that too much). It is marvelous how far we have come with technology. It certainly has been our saving grace.
Seeing the cats turn around when they hear my voice brings tears of joy to my eyes. I can't wait to be snuggled up with them again soon, stroking their soft black bodies and feeling them breathing a low rumble of happiness.
Justin and I only get the weekends to skype unfortunately due to our working/sleeping hours clashing. So it is somewhat of a treatie.
Three weeks left to go.
*sigh*

It's been a rough couple of weeks but I'm feeling like there is hope now. Only 4 weeks until I am reunited with my beautiful husband. You can not imagine how happy I will be, but know I will be walking on water.
Nothing comes without sacrifice, and Justin and I must be due to come into some outrageously good fortune soon. A holiday is a priority.
I won't be sad to see Dubbo behind me. We've kept the mortgage going and that's all that counts. Soon it will be a distant memory.
If you know someone who works away from home and loved ones, either on a contract or as an agency worker; hug them next time you see them and tell them you think they are the greatest human being that ever lived. They deserve to be appreciated for their selfless sacrifices in life. I could not do this all the time. I take my hat off to those who do, and my heart bleeds for their patient and loving kin.
I am not going to want to let Justin go when I get back. I may be still hugging him a week after my return. I never want to take his company for granted ever again.

dUBBo diSCo QuEEn & tHe GeReATRic fiREfiGhTinG SqAUd tEAm!

I went out dancing last night. In Dubbo. I really miss dancing...and singing louder than the DJ's instrumental serenade.
I am pleased to say that like a fine wine I think as we age we get better at dancing (not that aged wine necessarily gets better at dancing, but you get the point I'm trying to make). This must be because we become so much surer about ourselves, not caring about what others think and how we are being perceived. More comfortable about who we are and where we are going in life. Just living in the moment for what it is; a chance to just sing and dance. I look at the younger dancers and they seem so unsure; about themselves and their dance moves. I feel sorry for them.
Unfortunately age does mean that you know about the horrible effects of binge drinking the next day a lot more acutely. Your head wakes you up first to demand attention. You throw some panadol at your face and then in the mirror you discover that your eyes are blackened with smudged mascara that promised not to do this. You begrudgingly decide to perform eye cares on yourself, chanting in your thumping head that it will only take a minute and then you will be back in bed before you know it. Of course, ten minutes later you are still grappalling with the black tar which has now moved down from your eyes to your cheeks some how, and your eyes are red raw. This is starting to give you the shits and you wished that you were not so broke and tight when you shopped last to not buy the make-up removing soft wipes. On your way back to bed your stomach turns and your bowels twist helplessly...so you make a mercy dash to the little ladies room, so you can be anything but. Finally you make your way to bed cradeling a bottle of water like it's baby jesus. You feel like utter crap and you think that alcohol should be bannished from your life forever. This is what getting older is all about. We all have to go through it.
I am up and showered now. I've fed my starving dance temple of a body.. I look almost unscathed. I want to begin reading the latest craze in novel fiction - 'Fifty Shades of Grey' by EL James...but my brain refuses to cooperate by not delivering enough concentration cells. I am too hungover to protest. So I am blogging but it's sketchy as you can tell. My brain is unsure whether it is punishing me or not. Blogging while hungover and barely coherent is not really relaxing and it's taking me way too long to get to any sort of point. I think my brain might be winning this round.
On another interesting note, we were forced to evacuate the George Hatch Building (the dorms at Dubbo Base Hospital) when the fire alarms went off, about 30 minutes after we arrived back from the ED 2am BBQ (as you do), we turned up at 3am from being out drinking, and looking professional (and no it was not the BBQ that set the fire alarms off). It turned out to be the radiator heater steam from outside the dorms pluming through the 2nd storey kitchen window which had been left open. There were 6 disgruntled dorm dwellers outside, barely dressed and shivering and giggling awaiting the firefighters to make it all worth while. Two of us had admitted to being naked when the alarms went off and had to race to get clothes on; I was glad I wasn't the only one (refer to blog "10 things you didn't need to know about me.." that explains my naked sleeping curse). The firemen turned up about 15 mins later (just long enough for us all to have perished in a blazing fire wall of destruction), their average age was about 60, but looked impressive in their fireman suits complete with face sheilds none-the-less. Here's a 'Shout Out' to the Dubbo Fire Brigade! Thanks for getting out of bed at 3 am for The George Hatch Crew lads! I'm just glad it wasn't anything we three crazy nurses had done to set it off. Could have been a very expensive night indeed.
Back on the farm Justin's been having his own fun. A mad bull of Jono's (Justin's Dad) has escaped a transport truck in Weber and has gone rogue. The Weberians must be real stoked about that. It reminds me of that song "Cows with Guns". I had to crack up when Justin told me. I wouldn't want to come up against it or try to get it back on to a truck by itself. Good luck to the person who gets that job.
Bruce the Almighty (my pet wether lamb-ram) who's no longer cute and adorable has apparently attacked a visitor to the farm. An unsuspecting victom who thought to take a stroll through the orchard. Bruce took a running charge and struck. The poor mans back has been put out. For that I feel woefully sorry and I totally understand why Bruce might find himself in the dog-tucker freezer. I had to take advantage of the opportunity to tell Justin "I told you I wasn't making it up when I said that Bruce was stalking me and trying to charge me!". He wouldn't believe me, until now. I have broken a washing basket and badly dented a stainless steel cooking bowl over Bruce's head trying to convince him to leave me alone. Justin thought I was being ridiculous and over reacting. Really??!! Poor Brucey...I'm not there to defend my poor baby. Even though he scares the hell out of me sometimes, he's still my little lamb, even if he looks anything but a little lamb now. Sooty would be devastated to lose Bruce too. It's sad how attached I get to my pets. I wonder if this will change much when I have children. I can't see how, but people tell me that this happens. We'll see, hopefully, with any luck soon.
Well I must away because my head has taken my brain hostage and making demands for caffeine in large quantities, and as I don't have any 'zero tolerance' policies on such demands I shall go and arrange the exchange. Coffee me up Scotty!

4 mOnThs iN a LEaKy BoAT

Hi Everyone, long time no blog. I know some of you will have been 'watching this space' for some rare glipse into the life of cHeRRy and all my marvelous travel stories. You've all been disappointed, until now. Now you shall be rewarded for your loyalty. Here is a chance to go make yourself a hot drink, preferrably caffiene enhanced, and settle in to your iPad (if you are as cool as I clearly am now), and try to keep up with my exceptional blog genius mindset. *actual coffee pause* Ok, so here it is...this is the blog you have all been waiting for... I am indeed back in Australia, the main land, the land of OZ, miles away from my beloved Justin. Iam attempting to fulfill two midwifery contracts that equal four months. The only reason someone would decide to do this is for money, and lots of it. It's not hard to figure out why Kiwi's are leaving NZ at the speed of knots. I'd suspect they'd row themselves out if they had too, and some do and win medals (and some have perished trying), that's why Kiwi blokes are fit when they hit Aussie shores. Also not hard to see why so many Aussie gals are swooping in for some ripped Kiwi action - I was no exception 12 years ago. Anyway, how did I get onto this... So I have come back (but not home) to my native country to earn some actual money, real currency in the real world. Earning money in $AU dollars again has the added advantage of providing our Australian Mortgage with some much needed sustinance. It was getting a bit malnourished from the pitiful $NZ diet we had tried to feed it. So what have I been up to?... Well firstly, being an agency midwife/nurse is a lot like going to Summer camp, when you really didn't want to go. You find yourself sending letters back home begging for your hasty release; Justin just ignores mine. You stay in accommodation which is substandard to say the least. You make friends with strangers you ordinarily wouldn't give the time of day too. You eat crap and eventually find yourself less hungry, and then you notice you are losing weight and then you stop fighting it. I have to say I have some days when I really miss home and Justin, and then other days when I am coping better with it. I think on those good days I am working and keeping busy. It's when you stop and think about things that it all comes crashing down. I have almost changed my tickets home several times already. I never really even expected to make it this long. I'm almost half way. Two months down. That's 61 days of living camp hell. And another 61 days to go. Some of the highlights, in point form... * being the sole accoucher for breech twins and both being born in 'the caul' (waters intact) six minutes apart. That was an exciting shift on Anzac morning. The pink scrub shirt I was wearing has now been nicknamed my 'lucky twin shirt'. I may never get that opportunity ever again, with any luck. * I ended up in Cairns overnight when I had only expected a day trip, with a curious little malaysian midwife who was 65 years young. I had a great time, despite being force fed fruit from the woman every 10 mins. I don't think I've eaten fruit since my kidnapping. * I have been out 'clubbing' with a physio and a crazy ED nurse and danced so hard I crippled myself with a seriously unhealthy haematoma on the ball of my R)foot. I sung so loudly I almost lost my voice. And no night out is complete without a wholesome three-way spooning on a skinny dorm bed and laughing to boot. It was clean fun. I spooned the ED nurse actually. She was soft and cuddly. * I have done some interesting shifts in Special Care Nursery and the Children's Ward. I have had some privileged cuddles with some very beautiful babies. Many sets of twins. * I have been grocery shopping with the crazy ED nurse and we decided to look professional by taking our stolen shopping trolley through the drive-thru bottle-o. I have never laughed so hard, or looked more like an irresponsible and unprofessional ward of the state. We were on fire. * I have discovered 'TrueBlood'. And, yes, it is just vampire porn. That's why I love it. It's nothing like Twilight, but I am now a big fan. There has been so much more going on than this small list, but I feel it will suffice for now. And because I now have my very own swanky iPad I can now blog a little more routinely...so I will try to fill in some of the gaps soon enough. Stay tuned my pets.
